Five years and four generations confirm the arrival of the Canon EOS 450D. Much has changed since the market that first saw the light EOS 300D, and now the EOS 450D has slightly upgrade the specifications of the EOS 400D and withdrawal. Something more resolution, spot metering and, above all, the preview function approach contrasts with the arrival of justifying this low-end model. His main problem? Strong competition in this segment, including the young Canon EOS 1000D, for which the EOS 450D will have to learn to distinguish justify its higher price.
Presented earlier this year, the EOS 450D was a very short life cycle of barely half a year for the young EOS 400D. The early renewal of the base in this showcase of Canon enabled the firm to update some of the specifications of its then-by-SLR simplest and upload to the basket in the preview screen with auto focus by contrast.
The EOS 400D converted into the new EOS 1000D, the EOS 450D is facing a peculiar challenge: not only demonstrate that the modest upgrade has been worth it, but is able to offer something more than her little sister put on the market for less than 400 euros.
Novelty Live View
Neither the viewer nor the new spot metering or increased resolution. There is no doubt, already discussed in our first-touch shots that the main novelty of the EOS 450D is the incorporation of Live View, absent depending on the EOS 400D, and improved its system approach by contrast.
Already overtaken the discussion about whether this function is useful or not, now that is present in 90% of the SLR models seems sufficiently clear that there is no turning back. This should think of Canon to go into the hills just six months after launching the EOS 400D and removed this new model of the pocket.
In addition, the renovation allowed to kill two birds with one stone: to introduce the preview screen and give it the approach by contrast. Something that at the beginning of this 2008, was not as prevalent as it may seem now.
As you know, this technology allows the camera to focus automatically without having to go up and down the mirror reflex, and therefore, with greater agility and without losing the image on screen for a few seconds.
However, this focus system still has a long way to go. In general, is rather slow, and if the light is not enough, doubts and mistakes to pick a point now are fairly normal.
While fans might be enough, especially for those who deny the frame on the screen and continue to prefer the viewfinder, its performance may be a disappointment to those who come from a compact high-flying and hope to find something similar.
Its activation, incidentally, continues to take a path that most users seem unnatural: instead of being the trigger that sets in motion this approach as it pressed halfway, is another button marked with an asterisk-the - which is responsible for this task.
More screen
Another major developments in the literal sense, in addition, the EOS 450D is its screen, which now grows from 2.5 to 3 inches. Unfortunately, the resolution has not followed suit and settles for the same 230,000 points that wore its predecessor.
Here is an early excuse to start talking in a few months of a future EOS 500D. And is that even with their good performance, this has nothing to do with the LCD more than 900,000 items that look young Canon EOS 50D and Nikon D90.
Although they are set to benefit from rebuscar models above, is arguably tilting the monitor of the Sony A300-priced similar or even lower than many miss less.
The menus follow the style that Canon has used for all your digital SLR for just over a year. Simple and very intuitive, with the help of many shortcuts to control the sensitivity or white balance, among other parameters.
Furthermore, in the absence of another monitor, is the rear screen which is responsible for centralizing all the settings for the taking. It does so with a menu that allows easy navigation through two or three taps, access to almost all the functions of the camera.
Visor improved
One of the little details that also deserves to be listed as interesting novelty is the new viewfinder of the EOS 450D.
The improvement in the size and brightness of the frame through it comes topped with the presence of such important data as the sensitivity with which they are working. One more point for this EOS.
It is also very curious the new sensor located next to the viewfinder, which is responsible for the screen off automatically after the camera closer to the eye. Admittedly not a very original idea at this stage, Konica Minolta and used for years in their first digital SLR, but at least mark distances respect to the simplest EOS 1000D.
A CMOS which calls for optical quality
Without abandoning-of course-size APS-C, the EOS 450D bet now by a CMOS sensor type that rises to 12 million pixels effective resolution. An improvement not accompanied by parallel progress on issues such as the cleaning system or automatic adjustment of sensitivity.
In fact, was surprised by the modesty of this Canon in its range of ISO values. Faced with the fashion sensibilities-and figures forced stratospheric ISO 3200 than any compact 150-euro holds, this EOS settles for a maximum of 1600 ISO.
Modesty is not false, however, hides some extraordinary results because the control of noise, without undermining the protection of both the sharpness and detail is excellent with 800 ISO and the camera holds the kind without any problem with ISO 1600. So why not add at least a value of 3200 forced ISO?
This reserve and the unavailability of intermediate steps in the menu of ISO are the only objection that could be made to this SLR with a sensitivity and noise concerns.
Nor is it any surprise that the new CMOS operation that has a built-in liner in general, could be described as outstanding. Their level of resolution and color performance, in addition to the dynamic range of shots, put the EOS 450D as one of the safest in its class.
However, it is always possible to find points that have not been crowned with much success. The automatic white balance, for example, still leaves much to be desired when it comes to coping tungsten lights.
Nor has convinced the new method of automatic adjustment of brightness, that however much it seeks a kind of dynamic range expansion of the image, not showing too effective.
To extract the maximum potential of the camera, as well as playing with the RAW files, the resulting JPEG are excellent in most conditions, it is also important to invest in an optical conditions. It has become a litany comes to talking about the low-end SLR from various brands, but it is worth bearing that in mind.
And is that the Canon 18-55 mm f3.5-5.6 IS EF-S series that accompanies this body falls short of what the EOS 450D can give so far as the auto-focus with a System 9 points more than decent for this segment, and the potential of the 12-megapixel CMOS.
The good news is that the new version of this standard includes optical stabilizer IS, unlike that of the predecessor model. In the absence of stabilization integrated in the body, is thankful that Nikon and Canon are taken seriously the task of stabilizing its objectives even more economical.
The built-in flash, for its part, no highlights, and roughly dragged the flaws and virtues of his fellows: causes the shadow of a barrel of the goal if it focuses too closely and failed to illuminate when using a telephoto lens. The exhibition, yes, often very accurate.
Finally, the theory of self-improvement is no Camelo. After more than half a thousand shots’ help profusely from the Live View, the battery indicator shows no sign of weakness.
Half a dozen precise adjustments
It is not the hit of the season or possibly intended to be. Calmly and without making much noise in the double-meaning of the term, the more humble saga of the Canon EOS has been made with a reputation and a commercial tug difficult to combat.
The EOS 450D tightens screws one of the weakest of the EOS 400D and elevates this model to a stadium closer to half that segment of the basic reflex. A perfect strategy to stop the go-ahead to the EOS 1000D.
The improvements in the display and the display, the slight increase in the burst to 3.5 frames per second, including a spot metering system and preview Live View with contrast approach allows Canon EOS 450D put this a step further up.
Unquestionable quality and performance to date, but a design and ergonomics that are still glued to the window more core market. ¿Combination enough to justify a price slightly higher than the competition? Difficult to answer a question in which too many factors involved.
If you are looking for a safe investment, the EOS 450D is probably the best idea. Did you worse? That security must be paid by assuming that we are not betting on the best value at the time. There are genuine bargains out there.

The series of the popular compact Digital IXUS could not miss the feast of news that Canon has held this morning as a prelude to the opening and close of Photokina. More interesting than the nearly 15 million pixels of the IXUS 980 IS are its manual controls or 28-112 mm zoom that looks the IXUS 870 IS, 10 megapixels.
Drafting .- relegated to the background by the flood of news Canonica, the new Digital IXUS 980 IS and 870 IS also just looking to become a showcase for two of the models-a-priori more interesting this array stylized. The careful design, increasing the resolution, manual controls and coverage angle are, in general, the pillars on which rests the new couple.
Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS
The IXUS 980 IS is perched at the top of this saga, thanks to its new 14.7-megapixel CCD and image processor DIGIC IV. However, their chances are of the manual controls that make this model a rarity in the IXUS range.
Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS
Less fortunate have been with the optics, which settles for a modest stabilized zoom equivalent to 36-133 millimeters, or the screen, 2.5 inches and 230,000 points of resolution.
IXUS 870 IS
More moderate in regard to resolution (incorporates a CCD 10 million pixels), the IXUS 870 IS can boast of being one of the few compact Canon that includes among its features a wide angle lens with coverage.
This is a 4x optical zoom that pays a focal equivalent to 28-112 millimeters in step universal. With a maximum brightness of f2.8-5.8 among its benefits, not need, as made clear in the name of the model-IS optical stabilizer.
Canon Digital IXUS 870 IS
Among his most prominent, there are the presence of the new DIGIC IV processor and its display of 3 inches diagonally. As his presentation, the IXUS 870 IS has a maximum sensitivity of ISO 1600 and uses SD cards Card, SDHC and MMC (including MMCplus and HC MMCplus) to store their images.
Canon Digital IXUS 870 IS
For now, have not leaked information about the price and availability of either of these two models.

Mode of Direct Imaging (Live View Mode) allows you to view the scene in real time on the LCD of the camera. Thus facilitating the capture of images from positions complicated or from a tripod: the vision can be extended 5 or 10 times to help the manual focus, exposure and the depth of field can be checked and adjusted before taking the photograph. All the shooting modes and modes of operation can be selected when photography in the mode of Direct Imaging (Live View Mode). To determine exposure, using evaluative metering.
The information can be seen shooting overprinted on the screen for easy handling of the shooting. Options include brightness and RGB histograms, a screen grid to facilitate the composition and aspect ratios for standard sizes of photography.
For studio photographers, Mode Image Direct (Live View Mode) can be used with an external monitor or through EOS Utility. The images can be captured by remotely with the presence of art directors or clients, thereby saving valuable time get in the shot.

Timid developments confirm the arrival of the Canon PowerShot SX110 IS
As a minor update would catalog the newly introduced PowerShot SX110 IS, which does not provide very substantial developments to the first-SX100 IS. Thus, despite the rise of up to the 9-megapixel resolution and the more stylized body, the newborn remains intact its stable of 36-360 mm zoom.
Drafting .- A lack of news in the range of the PowerShot G or replacement of the PowerShot S5 IS, the new PowerShot SX110 IS has become, with the permission of the EOS 50D, in one of the launch of Canon’s most interesting day. All this despite the fact that the new model of long zoom is reluctant to incorporate a wide angle lens, in tune with the latest trend in the industry.
Thus, the SX110 IS takes over from the PowerShot SX100 IS one year after its launch without bringing anything new regarding the optical coverage. Is kept zoom stabilized by both the increases of 10, with a focal equivalent to 36-360 millimeters.
With a maximum brightness of f2.8-4.3 and a range of 1 cm macro, Canon it defends the progress made by the optical stabilization system. According to official data, the new mechanism is now able to offer an improvement of up to 4 steps with regard to the speed of normal shot.
9 megapixels
Stronger than the increase of one million points experienced by the CCD sensor, which goes from 8 to 9 megapixels, is certainly improving rear monitor. And is that the new SX110 IS not only increases the size of your screen up to 3 inches, but it also doubles the resolution to reach 230,000 points.
A cosmetic change that, in fact, comes accompanied by a body somewhat more compact and stylish than that of its predecessor.
Canon PowerShot SX110 IS
Without changes in the values of sensitivity (100 to 1600 ISO, with a value of 3200 forced ISO), the SX110 IS is still assuming a wide range of automatic and manual settings, including traditional modes PASM control. It also includes a new mode called Easy Auto Mode and a system for detecting the movement.
Powered by two standard batteries, this second generation of the family SX still betting on the SD cards and SDHC Card and prefers to put aside the high-definition video to remain faithful to the sequences of 640 x 480 pixels and 30 frames per second.

Canon PowerShot SX1 IS: touchdown
It appears almost identical to the SX10 IS, the new PowerShot IS SX1 is actually one of the compact launched by Canon most interesting in recent times. And that is beyond their benefits and photographic or video of its powerful optical angle of 20 increases in its casing houses a CMOS sensor type. Premature to jump or trend of the future, during the recent Photokina could spend a few minutes with her.
Cologne / Barcelona. Iker Morán .- will have to wait for a few months to get their hands or see in the windows a PowerShot SX1 IS fully operational. Its official price-above the 550-euro and the zeal of Canon to avoid out of Photokina 2008 samples taken with this compact, but some already are circulating pictures alleged not too promising, give an idea of the importance of this bet for signature.
And it is that while outwardly the SX1 IS seems a more compact long zoom (not least, is the twin sister of the PowerShot SX10 IS), inside it hosts a 10-megapixel CMOS rather than CCD sensors used so far in all-or-almost all of the compact.
Apparently identical, the PowerShot SX1 IS (right) and SX10 IS coexist in the renewed catalog of Canon.
Although this detail is just a technicality over for the vast majority of users, in fact, the SX1 IS intended to mark a turning point in terms of image quality, noise control and shooting speed concerns in this segment.
If he succeeds or not is still early to know. For now, we have to settle for a quick look at the benefits and design of the unit early this PowerShot WE with which it has already been able to spend a few minutes.
Relay upward
Differences aside, both the SX1 as the SX10 IS IS opt for a more robust than that of the PowerShot S5 IS, in which both chambers relevant for two reasons. Forms may be slightly less metallic curves or touch the body but the fact is that in the hands of the two chambers passed a great feeling.
One idea that is reinforced by seeing the metal barrel zoom, topped with an excellent idea: the real and equivalent focal appear etched in it, so that at any moment you can know the exact position of the target without looking at the screen nor the viewer.
Besides the absence of the RAW format, without doubt, one of the main criticisms which will face this couple-canonical, we miss least one front wheel to facilitate the handling of adjustments of exposure.
In its place, we have only one rear wheel quite comfortable to use and centralizing many of the controls of the camera. Those devoted to the exhibition, incidentally, now take this elegant aesthetics of menus using the sliders in the series PowerShot G.
28-560 mm
With the permission of the above CMOS, optics also marks a major leap in the new SX. Faced with the 12x optical zoom of the S5 IS, now extends coverage to 20x, and what is more interesting, new cameras were paid by the end of the optical angular momentum.
The result is a familiar zoom and 28-560 mm f2.8-5.6, which arrives in this case supported by the optical stabilizer IS from Canon. Judging by the early tests, the focus of the tour is really fast and the approach does not show too many problems, even in the most extreme focus.
Have disappeared, yes, that controls the S5 IS housed in one of the sides of his barrel and handle it quickly allowed the manual focus and macro.
Now the rear is a command that is responsible for managing these functions, with special attention to the system of manual focus, control of which rests in the rear wheel. Its handling is quite satisfactory, taking into account what is customary, thanks also to the needs of an expanding area of the image framed.
As with its predecessor, the SX1 IS uses four standard batteries and provides in front of two typical microphones, each on one side of the flash. There is also no changes in the characteristic red button dedicated to activate the video recording.
The screen, fully mobile, complete the list of good ideas inherited from the previous model. In the case of the new PowerShot, yes, this is a 2.8-inch widescreen monitor.
Unfortunately, the electronic viewfinder again leave something to be desired. And that in spite of its size of 0.4 inches, is slightly larger than that of the S5 IS.
Full HD Video
With the memory card slot (SD Card, SDHC and MMC) sealed to avoid temptations, little can be said about the performance of the new CMOS sensor used.
In addition to his happily-restrained-resolution, particularly emphasizes speed continuous shooting, up to 4 frames per second at full resolution. A figure in which the processor DIGIC IV also will have had much to do.
Another of the novelties brought by the new generation processor to the photographic inventory is the ability to record movies in high definition at 1080p. The SX1 IS becomes, behind the Casio Exilim Pro EX-F1, in the second compact that dares with this tool.
A role that, incidentally, comes with an HDMI connector, thus following in the footsteps of the most recent SLR models of the firm.
Many expectations
With the permission of the PowerShot G10, the new PowerShot IS SX1 has all the dots to become one of the most compact Canon awaken interest in the coming months.
If the SX10 IS merely reinforce the bet zoom long arguments with more traditional but equally interesting (see the angle or 20x zoom, for example), the SX1 IS opts for a more risky path that generates as much excitement doubts.
Will the new CMOS to live up to expectations or its size will remain an insurmountable barrier?
For now, what seems clear is that the SX1 IS is more a balloon catheter or an advancement path that could take the compact in the future than willing to raze a model in the window.

29 Nov
New star showcase of compact, the Canon PowerShot G10 arrived just in time to queue in our backpack and join us in a quick getaway to Rome. Several hundred shots later, the noise from 400 ISO, the more chromatic aberrations of the expected and some RAW whose potential is difficult to squeeze out the program with Digital Photo Professional slightly tarnished this first field trial compact with one of the most complete in the moment.
Iker Morán .- A sale in Spain since very recently, we could spend a few days with the newcomer Canon PowerShot G10. A quick field test in the unique context of the Italian capital has revealed the field behavior of this promising-and-awaited compact.
Its rugged construction, manual controls, RAW recording and the appearance-per-view of an angle of 28 millimeters have generated so many expectations that, after reviewing the first hundreds of samples collected, it may not all be met.
And it’s not forget that after these 500 euros and its high performance is still hiding a compact archiconocidas with some limitations, especially when talking about the noise.
Seamless management
¿The G10 brings the same problems found in some models of the previous saga PowerShot G regarding the sealing of a barrel of the lens? That is possibly the first question that many users will, but which, unfortunately, it is difficult to give an answer after only three days of cohabitation with the camera.
In addition, the construction of the G10 admits few painless. Robust and forceful, criticizing its volume would be going against one of the hallmarks of this family. It is heavy and large to be a compact, but its grip and its management are comfortable enough to forget this detail after a couple of hours of use.
Very similar to the PowerShot G9 in terms of management and distribution, the wheel of sensitivities now located to the right of direct viewer remains great.
The command dedicated to the exposure compensation Scramble a little at first, but corrected the gesture of going to dip into the main dial to adjust this value, its management with the left hand is very comfortable despite the fact that the wheel is something small and pretty tough.
The menus reflect the usual aesthetics of the latest PowerShot G. Only options to turn the image stabilizer and, above all, recording simultaneously in RAW and JPEG are more hidden from the account on the main menu.
While not especially fast, nor is its mission, nor the start-up or wait time between shots dilate in excess.
Only by working simultaneously in JPEG and RAW can notice a little more work that requires the storage of the two. Attention also to the weight of almost 15 megapixels and their impact on the capacity of the SD Card and SDHC.
Angular bill
Given that increasing the resolution will not be cause for celebration among potential users of this camera, is the new 28-140 millimeter lens that focuses the attention on the new compact.
His performance was excellent in terms of coverage, the TV is a bit short, but worth the sacrifice by the angle, zoom and focus of the tour.
With good light there is no problem, and only in extreme conditions we encountered failed attempts to approach. Interestingly also the macro approach of only 1 centimeter, although the volume of optical hampers this type of composition as close without causing shadows on the scene.
The catch has been made with a Canon PowerShot G10:
But in view of the images, is not all good news. The goal is behaving correctly to 28 millimeters even with the maximum aperture. The barrel distortion is more evident, if there is a close-up close, of course-but tolerable.
At the same margins quite correct that not-perfect-optics is maintained in regard to significant loss of sharpness at the edges.
The catch has been made with a Canon PowerShot G10:
Most obvious is the presence of chromatic aberrations in some images. The appearance of halos purple and green stripes occurs too often and easily in the scene recorded any area of contrast is cut or on a background very clear.
While the effort is logical that angular pass some bills, we must not forget that other brands have managed to lower this barrier of 28 mm far, getting even more satisfactory results in this subject.
The catch has been made with a Canon PowerShot G10:
Can these aberrations compensated for working on RAW? We are convinced that, but unfortunately the version 3.5 of Digital Photo Professional (DPP) that came with the camera-the first PowerShot G compatible with this software professional allegedly kept off these options to import the files.
More resolution, the same noise
Something similar happens to us very closely reviewing the samples collected and processed RAW files.
Surely, these files could give more of themselves in terms of sharpness, noise control or recovery of shadows and lights if they were successfully treated with a program like Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture, because the truth is that the DPP options fall far short.
The catch has been made with a Canon PowerShot G10. RAW format images taken in and processed with Digital Photo Professional 3.5:
Only in this context may be understood as the curious who this week compared the well-known photographer Michael Reichmann made the PowerShot G10 with a Phase One digital back, and in which the compact is not leaving anything wrong stop.
The truth is that, as shown in the photographs attached, resolution and accuracy of color and exposure, with a tendency to sobreexponer, at least in the tested model, is not lacking in the G10.
The dynamic range is also correct, despite the resolution that accumulates over the sensor and is particularly strong, especially in the ease with which the lights were “burned” if they are not cared for the exhibition.
The catch has been made with a Canon PowerShot G10. RAW format images taken in and processed with Digital Photo Professional 3.5:
The new system also provides automatic contrast too, or at least does not give more than what has already been seen on other occasions: the texture is recovering somewhat in the shadows, but the lights remain unchanged, unrelated to this office.
The problem is, as always, in the management of high sensitivities. And it is that noise is left in the shadows and see ISO 200, though without becoming annoying. The results at 80 and 100 ISO are really good, no doubt, but from 400 ISO processing attacked with virulence quite the detail and sharpness of the image.
The good news is that the chroma noise is fairly well controlled, giving the go-ahead to a luminance noise that does have a most enjoyable aspect at least in half sensibilities.
The catch has been made with a Canon PowerShot G10:
400 ISO
800 ISO
800 ISO
ISO 1600
ISO 1600
¿We expected more from this G10? Well the fact is that, carried by the initial enthusiasm and for his outstanding ergonomics, we had overlooked that PowerShot has always claimed to be a good reinforcement for an SLR, not a substitute.
The noise and chromatic aberrations make us again put his feet on the ground. Not like to ask if the G10 is an excellent compact, it is, and best, but to ask whether the Lumix DMC-LX3 Panasonic or the Nikon Coolpix P6000 no longer be able to challenge in a field dominated thus far by Canon.

The camera DSLR Canon 50D, which is to replace the Canon 40D, get your specifications to position itself as a more than acceptable digital SLR camera starter or for photographers who want a little more than his camera.
The Canon 50D takes an APS-C CMOS sensor, 15 megapixels, very high in megapixels, a well-sheltered body tougher and perfectly sealed against dirt and dust. In the event that any remaining dust mote in the sensor (which can happen especially when we changed our target), this camera is equipped with an automatic cleaning system.
To move all the information you work with this camera is a good processor. The Canon EOS 50D features the powerful DIGIC fourth generation, which among other things, makes us choose to take a picture of sensitivities between 100 and ISO 12800. The real range of sensitivity is 100 to 3200, but we can choose two modes of forced 6400 and ISO 12800. These high sensitivities in combination with the much-megapixel sensor reduces the noise introduced in the photos when using high values of sensitivity, basic to play with other parameters of the camera.
For those who like to make long bursts of photos, important picture of nature and sports, this camera is capable of taking up to 6.3 frames per second, with a maximum of 16 pictures in RAW format and more, up to 60, only if we choose to take snapshots in JPEG.
The screen is 3 inches, with resolution of 920,000 pixels, which gives you an impressive quality, about four times more than the model it replaces. The camera incorporates other technology with Live View system approach contrast and facial detection system, to compose and focus directly from the screen, something that consumers appreciate that the world is compact and when we took photos in complex situations or in the that the camera can not stand in front of the eye.
To view the photos directly on a TV in the highest quality incorporates an HDMI output.
Finally, the recording in RAW format, one of the advantages of this type of camera is complemented by reduced sRAW1 and sRAW2, which store the image pure with the same options that the subsequent edition of RAW completely, but with half space as the original card.
The price of the body of the Canon 50D will be around 900-1,000 euros to change, a temptation for which you want to make the jump to this kind of digital SLR.

Announced just a week ago, the EOS 5D Mark II, Canon is undoubtedly one of the stars of this year’s Photokina. Its high resolution of 21 megapixels, the increased sensitivity to ISO 25600 and incorporating new features such as video recording are the main weapon in this format SLR full to avoid losing ground to new competition.
Cologne. Iker Morán .- It has become too hopefully, in the opinion of many, but finally the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is not a mere speculation or rumor, but a camera that QUESABESDE.COM already have had their hands .
It was a fleeting encounter with a preproduction unit on the Rhine. Too short to draw broad conclusions yet, but enough to capture some of the impressions that transmits this SLR range of professional hands.
His uneven reception among the first professionals who have already reviewed their new specifications and the emergence of new models in this segment of moderately priced and comprehensive format (the Nikon D700 and Sony A900, specifically) make up a far more complicated than that in once hosted the EOS 5D.
Menus updated
The veteran users of the EOS 5D will not feel strange at the hands grasping the refurbished model. The basic lines and Canon continues to remain faithful to his idea of reserving the integrated vertical grip for the EOS-1 range.
It will be a matter of taste, but maintain some balance in size and weight that is a very wise idea for this range.
The construction of the new Mark II does not consent, prima facie, no objection. Even more so if, as in this case, one has the possibility to see the magnesium alloy chassis that has helped to conceive this body.
Indeed, official data claim that has been improved stamping and sealing of the camera to make it more resistant to inclement weather, to dust and water than its predecessor. Obviously, only time can corroborate this promise.
New times and functions of the latest generation have disrupted the main menu on the camera, but not the majority of commanders-in that provides a generous supply and its distribution throughout the body.
All this despite the overwhelming display has grown to 3 inches, in relation to the 2.5 that incorporates its predecessor.
In addition to the few external differences regarding the previous model, it also draws attention to the apparent similarity between the EOS 50D, even more so if you are armed to the hilt, and this optional EOS 5D Mark II. Only slightly more voluminous body of the second or marking Pentaprism clarify the doubts upon approaching a couple of reflex.
98% of vision
Taking into account what the EOS 5D Mark II houses inside it, saying that the developments would bring are few really unfair. Still, there are some points where three years of evolution have not draft at all.
One of the clearest is, for example, the viewer. Excellent in coverage and bright, her leap of 96% to 98% may know little if we present the data to look other models. And it is that both the Nikon D3 as the Sony A900 boast a 100% vision through the eyepiece.
Unjust or not evident in the literal sense of that word in this new Mark II is a step behind the extraordinary sights of their competitors.
Something similar happens with the shooting speed of 3.9 frames per second. The sound of the blast is impeccable and his timing-is-probably more than enough for most users there are done with this model.
It is true that the EOS 5D and shoot 3 frames per second, but the fact remains that the resolution has now risen from 13 to 21 million pixels. However, the problem comes from the always uncomfortable comparisons, and that is that the young A900 is capable of moving its 24-megapixel to 5 frames per second.
Video
Comparisons aside, there are three pillars of the EOS 5D Mark II: its high resolution 21 million pixels, the new processor DIGIC IV, who dares with a maximum sensitivity of ISO 6400 and forced with values of up to ISO 25,600, and the media more of them all: the ability to record movies.
The first two, we fear that much is still difficult to speak, as the model tested is not final and photographs obtained can neither run nor taken as a reference for the performance of the camera.
Yes we can, instead, discover how the video recording on the Mark II. The system is almost identical to that proposed by the Nikon D90 and very simple in its operation.
Just turn on Live View-like in the EOS 50D, we now have own command-and click the Set button in the center of the rear wheel. A red signal on the screen then tells us the start of the recording.
Two aspects marked distances in connection with the D90: the size of the video (of 1920 x 1080 points, ie Full HD) and the operation of the automatic focus by contrast during the recording of the sequences.
Attention, yes, because the final size of the file can give you more of a scare. A 4-GB card, for example, will serve for about 12 minutes of video quality and maximum resolution, we warn those responsible for the brand.
New landscape
With the newly opened doors of Photokina, it will be interesting to see how it runs the bath masses first of the new EOS 5D Mark II.
Arguments is clear that not lacking, and their hands and asking for their myriad options, the truth is that the camera promises. But long waiting times to produce expectations that are not always enforced, or at least not all of them.
Recent changes in the market, the emergence of new competitors, with the resurgence of Nikon and Sony’s claims, and the resolute commitment of Canon by combining sensitivity and resolution drawn a picture really interesting and a new challenge for this reflex.

Canon 40D digital SLR - LCD Monitor
To use Live View to maximize the Canon EOS 40D has been equipped with a large 3-inch LCD monitor. Unfortunately, this monitor is not equipped with as many pixels as the Nikon D300, for example, but it’s a big improvement over its predecessor. Fortunately, the autofocus also works in Live View on the EOS 40D, while their older sisters, 1D of the series have no such option.
Canon EOS 40D - Body & Viewer
For me the main improvements can be found in an area completely different. We have been asking for a long time and finally we achieved: a body that resists rain and dust. The seal is not as advanced as that of the range EOS 1D, but we do not have to cover or hide the camera when it rains and you can shoot without problems on the beach. The next major improvement, if not the most important is the optical viewfinder. At last Canon has equipped a camera in this segment with an optical viewfinder with a decent size. At last we are rid of the small viewing angle. The Canon 40D shows the ISO in the viewfinder and remains in sight during its adjustment, which in a welcome improvement.
Testing the Canon 40D SLR SLR
Of course the size of the sensor remains the same and the Canon EOS 40D has a multiplication factor of 1.6x focal length. We can continue using the EF-S lenses, including wide angle. In front of the sensor is located a filter that vibrates to remove dust. This is the same system found on the EOS 400D and the range 1D series and it works fine. LetsGoDigital tested the Canon EOS 40D over the EOS Safari 2007 in Kenya with excellent telephoto 400mm f/2.8 and the Netherlands with the standard EF-S 17-85mm 1:4-5.6 IS USM. You can read our findings in the next test of the Canon EOS 40D.
Canon 40D DSLR - control buttons
Of course the most notable difference is the wide-screen LCD on the back of the camera. Its three-inch leaves almost no room for the buttons. The buttons normally found on the side have moved on the monitor, except the menu button has been relocated to the top of the camera. Underlines the prominent position of the button of the Picture Styles. Canon obviously feels that this is an important setting. A new button is the AF-ON at the top right-hand grip for the thumb, the approach allows us to operate independently of the trigger, which is very handy when shooting photos of action.
Canon EOS 40D SLR - Viewer & Live View
Only we will find when looking through you, the viewing angle of the optical viewfinder has been improved considerably. It gets the same level as those of the EOS-1D cameras, except for the fact that the top-end models offer a field of vision of 100%, while the Canon 40D is reached at 95%. Live View, on the other hand, it offers a 100%. The standard crystal mate is right and the manual focus is easy. A new feature that Canon is novelty in this segment is the fact that the screen mate Ef-A can be changed by another 3 different on the Canon EOS 40D. I liked that the ISO is visible in the viewfinder while the tune, so we will not have to remove the camera’s eye during the operation. We also see in the display a warning if the camera is in black and white, this would not be a disaster if we shoot in RAW, but if it would be if we did in JPEG. The only thing that I find missing is an indication of the type of measurement used. Canon EOS 40D - Speedlite 580EX II Flash
We can put an external flash at the top of the excellent viewfinder, and the shoe has been designed to be sealed in the case of using the new Speedlite 580EX II. The buttons on the top LCD are familiar, ero have been displaced from their former position. We need some time to get used to if we worked with the EOS 30D. The command dial on the left has three special buttons to store our own preferences. The buttons C1, C2 and C3 allow us to schedule our own settings for ease of use when shooting.
Canon 40D - Grip & lithium ion battery
It has also been changed and improved the position and the sealing of the connectors. You can access them more easily and at the same time the seal is better. The camera uses a lithium ion battery BP-511, which is housed at the handle, as in its predecessors. Canon offers two optional handles for the EOS 40D, which are placed at the bottom of the camera and offer a second-timer and other elements. The simplest, the BG-E2n houses a second battery or a set of AA batteries. The second model is the WFT-E3 is both a WiFi adapter. A best solution is to equip the camera with greater functionality. The Canon WFT-E3 also has a USB port for connecting a GPS. In my opinion, this series should be integrated into the body, but made no request never stops.
Canon EOS 40D - Focus Points
The Canon 40D has nine points of focus, which is similar to the EOS 30D, but here is where the comparison ends. The auto has been changed, improved and is now more sensitive. All areas are of the type known as sensor cross. They are sensitive both horizontally and vertically. The sensitivity is f/5.6 and the central focus point can also work with f/2.8. The auto focus works well in practice. It is very useful to be able to separate the approach of the shutter release button, it works wonderfully especially in photos of action. The only thing that is not discovered as a link to exposure and exposure to the trigger lock and the AF only to the AF-ON. You can synchronize the blockade of exposure to the trigger but I had to press further AF-ON for the measurement of light.
Canon 40D digital SLR camera - Joystick
What I liked so much the joystick to change the focus points. In my opinion, is a bit too small and I have problems to select a focus point in the corners. In addition, he played frequently joystick in the face to look through the viewfinder, which accidentally changed the focus point. The alternative would be to use the main command dial to make your selection, to be giving back any more, but I think in practice it is faster.
Canon 40D - SLR camera silently
The Canon EOS 40D is a digital SLR camera that has become very quiet. And when we use objectives USM can also shoot almost in silence. When you press the shutter release button is all that we hear a click dry. This makes the Canon 40D is extremely suitable for shooting in environments that require silence, as a church or a play. In such places, any sound mind. We should not forget to turn off the sound confirmation approach. All settings are very accessible and only the image quality required to navigate through the menu. I would have liked to have a separate button for that task, but anyway it is not a setting that is changed often. All adjustments are obvious and can be changed quickly via the LCD screen on the back of the Canon 40D. It is not as functional as with the Olympus, but the work is done is very pleasant when we use a tripod and the camera is at a height difficult. The wide viewing angle allows us to clearly see the setting that we are changing.
Canon 40D Live View - Button & AF-ON SET
The wide angle of vision is also important for the Live View system. When you press the SET button in the center of the main command dial to see what we’re catching on the LCD screen. When you press the AF-ON button to activate the AF. The picture darkens a second because the mirror must be closed in order to focus correctly. The Canon EOS 40D can not focus on the contrast with the image sensor as some compact and the Panasonic L10 can do. The menu also takes advantage of the large screen. It is easy to read and noticed the difference going to work with a camera with a screen smaller. The menu has changed considerably and now has the same structure that we find in their older sisters. Working with them is very enjoyable, as is the joystick.
Canon EOS 40D - Recording the photos on the card
Canon has finally heard our demands and has changed an annoying aspect of the previous models. The Canon EOS 40D now shows a warning message if you try to open the door to the card’s memory, instead of turning off the camera and thereby losing the photos that were in the buffer, as happened in previous models. Fortunately, this belongs to the past and after the countdown of how many pictures have been recorded in the memory card, now we’ll know when it’s safe to open the compartment, a big improvement.
Canon 40D SLR camera - Dynamic Range
The dynamic range is something very special in the Canon EOS 40D. The 40D offers 14-bit files, while the EOS 30D worked with 12-bit files. And these extra 2 bits showed up despite the fact that the pixels are made smaller. Although development is not far along with the two separate pixels Fujifilm, is still impressive. Of course everything has its limits, so we have to monitor the contrast. If we want to get more from our archive, you can set ‘light tone priority’ - focus on light shades - in the custom setting II-3. Need some extra calculation and reduces the speed of continuous shooting, but it’s worth with subjects with high contrast.
Canon 40D digital SLR - Picture Styles
Canon’s Picture Styles are already familiar. Canon has added a few more on the Canon EOS 40D. Picture Styles allow us to adjust sharpness, contrast, saturation and color tone. In neutral and so we get good photos. The adjustment of sharpness may be somewhat stronger in my opinion, but Photoshop will do a good job here. If we do not want to edit our pictures, just need to increase the sharpness. The saturation and color tone are mainly personal preferences. Only we have to try and find that we like best. Unless, of course, that we work in RAW, which gives us the option to edit our photos afterwards. DPP also allows us to work with Picture Styles but Adobe’s software is not compatible. Personally I’m delighted with the neutral setting. Everything looks neutral and is a perfect base for a finish later. Canon 40D - Automatic white balance
If I have to make any comment regarding the image quality would be in terms of white balance in incandescent light, too warm. A small detail that only bother us if we work in JPEG. But in my opinion, those who purchase a camera like this, should work with RAW to achieve the maximum from the camera. Naturally JPEG can be handy if we can save in both formats at once. In any case, the white balance works well in other situations and we can create a custom or correct ourselves. Do not rely too much on what the LCD displays, since the image is too saturated in my opinion and we will give a wrong idea.
Canon EOS 40D - Recording settings
We have at our disposal many adjustments on the Canon EOS 40D. And before you know it, forget that what you did with them. Therefore you can link to more frequent adjustments to the buttons C1, C2 and C3. Not only can store the programs of exposure, sensitivity and white balance, been all the settings menu, for example; opening. It allows us to store different settings for different circumstances. We have to watch out anyway if we have temporarily altered anything in any of the modes C, as the camera will return to the default mode when it is in suspension. For example, adjust the shutter speed of 1 / 250. While photographing, with the button in C1, I changed the speed to 1/125s with the intention of shooting at that speed for a while. When the chamber was revived after being in suspension mode (we can not have the camera all the time in the eye), the shutter speed was changed again to 1/250s. The adjustments in the ways C can be totally different from the others are not linked in any way. If we change from C1 with a sensitivity of ISO 100, Tv in the sensitivity can even be ISO 400, so we must monitor the settings.
Objective Canon EF-S 17-85 IS USM
The Canon EOS 40D kit can come in with affordable EF-S 18-55 or the more expensive EF-S 17-85 IS USM. I recommend the latter. The aim largely decides the quality of the picture, so we should not save in this aspect. The EF-S 17-85mm we have used is a good combination with the EOS 40D. We see almost no color edges, even at wide angle, just a bit of distortion and a nice contrast. They are also good to work with the 40D lenses L, which will have a perfect combination. Both the quality and management are at a high level.
Considering a storage capacity of 1GB:

Small JPEG Fine - 19,361,288 pixels - 779 photos
Small JPEG Normal - 1936×1288 pixels - 1451 photographs Canon EOS 40D - Buffer considerable
The photos were not necessarily recorded on the card immediately, because Canon EOS 40D has a considerable buffer. While not shoot at full speed, fit in the buffer to 20 images at maximum quality RAW or 205 JPEG. This is great for a camera in its class. By using the shutter speed faster, the number of pictures down a bit but is still excellent.
Canon 40D - 6.5 frames per second
The Canon EOS 40D is capable of capturing 6.5 frames per second or less, according to the specifications. Well, it depends a lot on the shutter speed and other factors. In practice I could not reach that speed, leaving between 6 and 6.5 fps, which anyway is an impressive achievement and 9 out of 10 is even too fast. Do not think too much about it.
Canon 40D - USB 2.0 Hi-Speed
One advantage of a memory card is the largest high-speed data transfer rate assuming that your computer and device that reads the card is equipped with a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed. If we do not have, we must look for a card reader. This is a handy device that connects to the USB port and can read and write in a card quickly. This device will be recognized by the computer as an external hard drive. In addition it will serve to save energy.
Canon EOS 40D - Lithium Ion Battery
The lithium ion battery lasts a long time, in regard both in terms of years in the market as the quantity of photos you can take a load. Canon claims that can be taken between 800 and 1,000 photos at standard room temperature. Do not get get to that amount, but the temperature in the Netherlands during the test was certainly under and I was working much on Live View, a function that consumes a lot of energy. Nevertheless, it is a good achievement, even buy a spare battery to have no surprises.
CONCLUSION
Digital SLR camera Canon EOS 40D
The seven models, from the EOS D30 to the 40D, have changed dramatically. The image sensor and processor have given few strides and the camera itself is much improved. No one can imagine now be happy with a 1.8-inch screen at the rear of the camera. The difference with the cameras of today is evident and the EOS 40D is a true example of where it has come to a technology that has not stopped advancing. If you still have people who are not convinced that modern digital SLR cameras outstrip 35mm film cameras, I suggest working with the Canon EOS 40D for a while.
Canon EOS 40D - Good image quality
The image quality of the Canon EOS 40D leaves little to be desired. We can use the photos without problems with high ISO, such as ISO 800 or 1600. There is some noise but not annoying, even less if convert the pictures with Adobe. If we use DPP, noise is visible, which gives us a film of the old days.
Canon 40D - White balance and sharpness
The color of the Canon 40D has convinced me and should tirarme their hair out to find something negative. If I have to mention something should be the automatic white balance, which is too red under incandescent light. But the shooting in RAW or if we create a custom white balance will solve the problem. We could complain about the low setting sharpness, but we can use Picture Styles to improve it or change it retrospectively through software. Anyway, all these are small details, and I wonder what more can we want in this field.
Canon 40D - Joystick for the focus points
If we express any criticism would be some details of the camera itself, the fact of not being able to disconnect the auto exposure and in the way I wanted, but this is something very personal, as you must have thought. The joystick is a bit more general. I am not used to it, his answer is not good enough. It might also have preferred to work in the auto sensor (Live View). Also on display could have been improved with better color and more pixels. No, not at the wheel, the sensor is perfect. My personal list has more things: one could see the measurement system in the display and we should be able to use a GPS connection without buying expensive WiFi module. All of these problems are still marginal, and has very little to do with the excellent quality of the EOS 40D.
Canon 40D - Impressive digital SLR camera
Let’s be honest: the Canon EOS 40D digital SLR camera is a really complete. It’s a solid camera, with an excellent autofocus, a silent shutter, an excellent optical viewfinder and a good handling. Additionally, the Live View works perfectly, we can walk in the rain with the camera and is an excellent tool with high quality functions. The negative points are there because we made an effort to find them, it was like finding the famous needle in a haystack. It is always possible to improve a product, but with the EOS 40D is difficult. After seven models must admit that it has been very high in the SLR EOS half of the segment.

Large 6.4?m2 pixels are redesigned to more light and provide a better signal to noise ratio for lower noise images throughout the ISO range. The full-frame sensor has the same dimensions as a frame of 35mm film. This means that wide-angle lenses stay wide, without the change in viewing angle associated with smaller sensor cameras. Like qualify for finer control over the depth, photographers move to the EOS 5D Mark II full-frame format, the newly designed broad, bright viewfinder 98% coverage on a joy to work with.
4 new DIGIC processor
A new 4-DIGIC processor, combined with 14-bit analog to digital conversion offers smooth mono-tonal gradations in areas such as skies and very accurate color rendition. In addition to HD movies, DIGIC 4, the high speed for long uninterrupted continuous eruptions of large JPEGs, near-instant start-up time and the immediate and speedy review after shooting. DIGIC 4 also provides for improved noise reduction algorithms, in addition to the already low noise images from the EOS 5D Mark II, the CMOS sensor.

Both the BG-E4-E6 and WFT feature a vertical shutter release orientation and other essential controls for portrait work comfortably, with a strong grip to help balance the camera when used in combination with long lenses.
Presentation Technologies:
CMOS
Canon’s CMOS technology is one of the company is the main competitive advantages, with noise reduction circuitry at each pixel site delivers virtually noise-free images. Compared with the CCD technology, the lower power consumption characteristics of Canon’s CMOS sensors also contribute to longer battery life.
Signal conversion in Canon’s CMOS sensors is handled by individual amplifiers at each pixel site. Unnecessary charge transfer operations are avoided, greatly accelerate the process to signal to the image processor. Noise generation is reduced, power consumption is limited and faster frame rate potential is increased.
DIGIC
Image data captured by the CMOS sensor is processed by Canon’s DIGIC image processor specially built before being written to the camera memory card. DIGIC technology uses an advanced image processing algorithms to provide accurate, natural colors, accurate white balance, and advanced noise reduction. Ultra-fast processing speeds result in a highly responsive camera operation and near-instant start-up time.
DIGIC chips operate with a high-speed DDR SDRAM image buffer - reading, processing, compressing and writing image data fast enough to clear the buffer during continuous shooting long bursts. And since DIGIC integrates all major functions, power consumption to a minimum.
EOS Integrated Cleaning System
The EOS Integrated Cleaning System combats dust on the sensor in three important ways: Reduce, Repel and Remove.
* Reduce - Internal camera mechanisms are designed to dust. The new cap prevents dust generation through wear on the cap itself.
* Repel - Anti-static technologies, including a special fluorine coating, applied to the low-pass filter that the front of the sensor, so there is no substance to attract.
* Remove - A Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit uses hi-frequency vibrations to shake the dust from the infrared filter for a period of about one second after each start. For instant shooting after power up, this feature is disabled immediately the shutter release button is pressed.
Canon also has an internal Dust Delete Data system that can map the position of visible dust on the sensor. This can then be deleted automatically after the shoot with the latest Digital Photo Professional software.
Picture Style
Picture Style pre-sets simplify in-camera control over image qualities. Picture Style pre-sets can be seen as different types of film - each a different color provision of a reaction. Within each selectable pre-set, photographers have control over sharpness, contrast, color saturation and tint. The camera’s factory default configuration is set to immediately usable JPEG images without need for additional menu settings. Picture Style presets applied to a RAW image can be revised with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software.
The six pre-sets are:
* Standard - crisp, vivid images that no post-processing
* Portrait - optimizes the color hue and saturation and weakens sharpening to attractive skin tones
* Landscape - for punchier greens and blues with stronger sharpening to an edge on the crunchy mountains, tree and building lines
* Neutral - ideal for post-processing
* Faithful - adjusts color match with the subject in color when shooting under a color temperature of 5200K
* Monochrome - for black and white photograph with a range of filter effects (yellow, orange, red and green) and toning effects (sepia, blue, purple and green).
Software
Digital Photo Professional software
Digital Photo Professional software provides high speed and high quality processing of lossless RAW images. Processing with Digital Photo Professional provides real-time display and immediate application of image adjustments, which control over RAW image variables such as white balance, dynamic range, exposure compensation, noise reduction and color tone - plus the ability to Auto Focus points on a picture. The Lens Aberration correction tool allows precise correction of various types of disturbances caused by certain cameras. Images can be incorporated into the camera with sRGB or Adobe RGB color space.
Digital Photo Professional supports sRGB, Adobe RGB, RGB Color Match, Apple RGB and Wide Gamut RGB color range supports. ICC (International Color Consortium) profiles can be attached to TIFF or JPEG images when converted from RAW. This allows faithful reproduction of colors in software applications that support ICC profiles, such as Adobe Photoshop. To improve efficiency, a set of image adjustments can be saved as a recipe and applied.
EOS Utility
The latest version of EOS Utility provides essential support for Remote Live View shooting, camera configuration and the image transfers. Closely integrated with Digital Photo Professional, EOS Utility can be configured to monitor “hot topics” and rename folders automatically move incoming images in a structured file system. Users can also tag their images with EXIF data, including information about copyrights.
Picture Style Editor
Picture Style Editor enables users to individual Picture Styles that fit with their personal needs. Every Picture Style contains detailed information about how specific colors should be represented in an image. Once new Picture Styles are created, they can be uploaded directly into the camera and applied to JPEG or RAW images. When working with RAW files in DPP, both personally Picture Styles and the 6 predetermined Picture Styles can all be adjusted.
